Before paying for software for your next class project, check whether your student status already gives you access. Coding environments, design tools, planning apps, and cloud learning resources all have education offers worth investigating.
The catch is that “free for students” can mean very different things: an education license, a short trial, a limited credit balance, or a discount on a paid subscription. A viral list of “67 free subscriptions” does not establish that every student can claim every product—or that the products are all part of one bundle.
This guide separates verified GitHub offers from other education programs, explains two commonly repeated claims that need correcting, and gives you a simple activation plan. It is based on official offer pages; it does not claim that every benefit has been personally redeemed.
Start with the GitHub Student Developer Pack
The GitHub Student Developer Pack brings together partner benefits for verified students. Each offer has its own terms; approval is not a single unlimited subscription covering every product mentioned on social media.

How to apply for GitHub student benefits
GitHub’s student application guide requires a personal account, a minimum age of 13, enrollment in a degree- or diploma-granting program, and evidence of current student status.
- Prepare a current enrollment document, dated student ID, class schedule, transcript, or official verification letter.
- Open your GitHub Education benefits settings and start a student application.
- If the application requires an academic email, add and verify it on your account.
- Submit the requested details, then use the Education portal after approval.
- Open the individual offers you need and complete their separate redemption steps.
GitHub’s academic-email requirements vary by institution. If your school does not provide academic email addresses, its documentation describes supplying official evidence of that policy. If the domain is unrecognized, contact Education Support with your institution’s details. An address that does not end in .edu is not, by itself, a reason to abandon the application.
Design and study tools: check the separate education routes
For the following products, use their own official education pages to establish eligibility. A familiar brand name in a shared list does not tell you which plan or features you will actually receive.

Canva deserves particular care. Being a university student does not automatically unlock a personal Canva Pro subscription. Ask your university whether it provides Campus access, or start with Canva Free. Use the plan your institution actually offers rather than assuming a premium entitlement.
Postman’s old student-program address now redirects to its Learning Hub. You can use the published learning resources, but check current product pricing and account limits separately if your project needs team or paid features.
Does Cursor still give every student a free year of Pro?
The current Cursor student page does not promise a universal free year of Pro. Its FAQ says anyone can start for free and directs students to campus and online events for promotions that upgrade access.
That is materially different from a guaranteed annual Pro subscription. If you find an older post advertising one, check the live offer and verification flow before planning your course or project around it. This review did not verify that an older promotion remains available to new applicants.
Cloud credits, learning credits, and free labs are different
Choose the cloud benefit that matches the task. A lab credit can help you complete a training exercise without paying for a course, but it may not let you host your own application.

Before starting a cloud project, record the exact credit type, expiration date, services covered, and what happens when the balance runs out. Where available, enable budget notifications and spending controls; check whether they merely notify you or actually stop usage. Remove resources you no longer need.
For a first class assignment, a guided lab is often the simpler starting point. Move to a personal deployment when you can identify the resources it creates and explain how you will stop or delete them.
Amazon, Spotify, YouTube, Apple, and Samsung: separate offers
These brands have their own eligibility and regional terms. Do not treat their promotions as automatically unlocked by a GitHub approval.
- Amazon Prime: Amazon’s US information describes a six-month trial for eligible young adults and higher-education students, followed by discounted paid membership. That is a trial, not permanent free Prime.
- Spotify Premium Student: a discounted paid plan for eligible higher-education students, with periodic student verification. Check your local price and participating institution.
- YouTube student memberships: discounted Premium or Music Premium access is subject to student verification and availability in your location.
- Apple Education Store and Samsung Education Offers: education purchasing offers exist in the US stores linked here. Compare your own country’s store, eligible products, and final price before buying.
If you study in Morocco or another country outside the market described on an offer page, verify local availability first. A US promotion, a supported payment method, and a recognized university are separate requirements; student status alone does not settle all three.
Build a useful student toolkit in one afternoon
You do not need to activate every offer. Start with an assignment you already have, then claim only the tools that help finish it. The combinations below are suggested workflows, not promises of eligibility.

For example, a student building a campus-events prototype could first write the requirements, create a repository, design two screens, and document the setup. A database or paid deployment becomes useful only when the prototype needs it. The project gives you a reason to use the offers; the number of accounts you create does not measure progress.

Keep an offer tracker so free access stays useful
Copy this record for every benefit you activate:
- Product and official offer link.
- Eligibility confirmed, plan name, and activation date.
- Credit amount or included usage, if applicable.
- Expiration or reverification date.
- Renewal price and whether automatic billing is enabled.
- Permitted use, including any restrictions on commercial work.
- Project using the tool, export location, and cancellation reminder.
Set a reminder before a trial ends or a license needs reverification. Save important work in a format you can still open if you lose access. Check the license before using an education benefit for freelance or client projects.
How much can you really save?
Calculate savings from tools you would otherwise pay for—not from the advertised retail value of every offer you can claim. If you would never buy a particular service, accessing it for free may help you learn, but it has not reduced an existing expense.
Illustrative example: suppose you already pay $12 a month for one tool and $8 for another. If verified offers fully replace both subscriptions for nine months, you avoid $180 in spending: ($12 + $8) × 9. Subtract any charges you still pay. These are fictional prices, not current product quotations.
Keep cloud and fee credits in a separate column. A $50 credit that you never use should not be counted as $50 saved. This approach produces a realistic budget and avoids promising every student “thousands of dollars” in annual savings.
Your first three actions
- Check your institution’s software portal before starting new subscriptions.
- Apply through the official GitHub Education route and choose a small number of relevant offers.
- Record the terms and renewal dates, then use the tools to complete a project you can show.
Student benefits are most valuable when they remove a real barrier to learning. A finished prototype, a documented experiment, or a stronger portfolio will outlast a temporary promotion.
