Claude by Anthropic
Description
Claude by Anthropic is an AI assistant for writing, research, document analysis, coding, and creating useful work from your files and instructions. This guide explains Claude pricing, practical uses, privacy, and the differences between chat, Artifacts, and Claude Code.

Claude at a glance
- Developer: Anthropic.
- Tool type: AI assistant with free and paid access.
- Useful for: Drafting, comparing documents, explaining information, coding, and building reusable outputs.
- Access: Web, desktop, and mobile, with capabilities varying by plan and environment.
- Recommended first step: Test a small task whose accuracy you can evaluate yourself.
What can Claude do?
Claude can work with documents, spreadsheets, presentations, images, and code; search online; and use connected tools. Projects organize related context and instructions, while memory and reusable skills support continuing work. Access and permissions determine which actions are available. Anthropic is also merging Cowork and chat into one Claude experience, starting with a rollout to Pro and Max. See the official product overview.
Practical use cases
- Writers: Give Claude an outline, audience, and source material. Ask for a first draft and a separate list of unsupported points requiring research.
- Students: Ask for an explanation at your current level, then request practice questions. Try answering before asking Claude to check your reasoning.
- Analysts: Compare two reports and request a table of changed figures, assumptions, and unresolved discrepancies.
- Small businesses: Turn product specifications into a customer FAQ, then check that every answer matches your actual policies.
- Developers: Explain a failing test, plan a change, or review a patch. Provide the relevant files and expected behavior.
Claude chat, Artifacts, and Claude Code
Chat: questions and working through ideas
Start with a conversation when you need an explanation, draft, comparison, or analysis. Supply the material you want used and define the output. For a document comparison, for example, specify which version is authoritative and whether differences in wording or meaning matter most.
Artifacts: outputs you can revisit and refine
Artifacts provide a separate place to work on content such as documents, designs, dashboards, and interactive tools. Basic artifact creation is available across plans. Design, Slides, and Docs templates are in beta on paid plans, with additional enterprise controls. Availability also depends on enabling the required code-execution and file-creation capability. Check the official Artifacts guide.
A useful first experiment is a small project checklist with editable tasks. Check whether the result is easy to revise and export before adopting it for a recurring workflow.
Claude Code: work inside a development project
Claude Code can read a codebase, modify files, execute commands, and connect to development tools. It is available through terminal, IDE, desktop, and web workflows, subject to account and environment requirements. See the Claude Code documentation.
Start in a version-controlled test project. Ask it to explain its proposed fix, inspect the diff, and run relevant tests. An attractive demo is not a substitute for verifying your own application.
Claude pricing: Free, Pro, Max, and team plans
These are the listed USD web prices on the review date. Taxes, location, app-store billing, and future changes can affect the amount you pay. Confirm the official pricing page before subscribing.
| Plan | Listed price |
|---|---|
| Free | $0 |
| Pro | $20 monthly, or $200 billed annually |
| Max 5x | $100 monthly |
| Max 20x | $200 monthly |
| Team Standard | $20 per seat/month billed annually; $25 monthly |
| Team Premium | $100 per seat/month billed annually; $125 monthly |
| Enterprise | Listed at $20 per seat/month billed annually, plus usage at API rates; confirm your terms |
Team is advertised for 2โ150 people. Max documentation confirms the two monthly tiers. Paid access still has usage limits; โ5xโ or โ20xโ does not mean unlimited use.
Is Claude Pro worth paying for?
Our recommendation: Try Free on three representative tasks before upgrading. Keep track of the time saved, corrections required, and limits reached. Pay for a specific capability or capacity you need, rather than assuming the most expensive tier produces the best result for every task.
Before buying Max, estimate how often a limit actually interrupts productive work. For a team, evaluate administration and data requirements as well as seat cost. Use our AI tool evaluation guide to make that comparison repeatable.
Claude privacy: what happens to your data?
Consumer and commercial rules differ. For Free, Pro, and Max, Anthropic describes model-improvement choices, safety-review exceptions, and separate handling of feedback. Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even with Model Improvement enabled. Read the consumer training policy and review your Privacy Settings.
Anthropic says commercial inputs and outputs are not used for training by default, but explicitly submitted feedback or other consent can change how that material is used. See the commercial data policy.
For your first test, use public or redacted documents. Before connecting company tools, confirm your organization permits the workflow and check the permissions being granted. A privacy setting is not a replacement for your organizationโs data-handling rules.
Strengths and limitations to evaluate
- Broad workflow support: You can try writing, analysis, reusable outputs, and coding without judging the product from one isolated prompt.
- Iteration: Clear feedback and reference material make it easier to assess whether revisions improve the result.
- Accuracy: Verify quotations, citations, calculations, and claims against the original evidence.
- Access: A feature shown in marketing may depend on your plan, enabled capabilities, permissions, or rollout.
- External actions: Review changes to files and connected services before relying on them.
A practical Claude prompt to copy
Compare the two attached project briefs. Create a table of differences in scope, deadlines, responsibilities, and budget. Cite the section supporting each difference. Do not fill gaps with assumptions. Finish with questions we must resolve before approving the project.
Then check three rows against the original documents. Did Claude distinguish an omitted detail from an actual contradiction? Did it preserve units and dates? This simple test measures usefulness more directly than a general claim that an assistant is โpowerful.โ
Claude frequently asked questions
Is Claude free?
Yes, there is a free plan. Additional features and capacity depend on the subscription. Start with the pricing comparison above and confirm current limits in your account.
Does a Claude subscription include API credits?
Do not treat a chat subscription as an API-credit bundle. Anthropic lists API rates separately. Before connecting a developer tool, check whether it uses subscription access or a separately billed API account, and set a spending limit where available.
Is Claude one AI model?
Claude names both Anthropicโs assistant and its model family. The application also provides tools, instructions, and context. For any comparison, record the model selected and the tools enabled.
Can Claude analyze PDFs and spreadsheets?
The official product overview lists PDF and Excel support. For an important file, first ask Claude what it can read, then verify extracted figures and any missing pages or sheets.
Can Claude browse for current information?
Claude supports web search and available browser workflows. Ask for links to the sources actually consulted, and verify publication dates before using time-sensitive claims.
Does Claude Code require programming knowledge?
You can describe tasks in natural language, but someone still needs to verify the resulting software. Beginners should start with a small test project and review changes before deploying anything.
Are Artifacts included on the free plan?
Basic creation is supported. Paid templates and connected features have separate requirements. The Artifacts guide above explains platform and capability settings.
Is Claude better than ChatGPT?
There is no useful universal answer for every workflow. Compare both with identical source material and score accuracy, editing time, usability, and cost. Our ChatGPT directory guide gives you the corresponding starting points.
