ChatGPT by OpenAI is an AI assistant for writing, research, learning, coding, and working with files. It is a product with several tools and model options, rather than one fixed AI model. This guide explains what to try, what it costs, and what to check before relying on its output.

Last checked: September 30, 2026. This is an editorial guide based on official documentation, not a hands-on benchmark or a guarantee of results.

ChatGPT at a glance

  • Developer: OpenAI.
  • Category: General-purpose AI assistant and productivity platform.
  • Pricing: Free entry plan with optional paid subscriptions.
  • Access: Web and supported apps; individual features vary by platform.
  • Best starting point: One real task that you can check yourself.

What can ChatGPT do?

OpenAI describes three ways to work: Chat for conversations, Work for tasks that produce a deliverable, and Codex for development workflows. Depending on access, it can research online, analyze files, create documents and presentations, run code, and use connected plugins. Voice, browser actions, and other tools depend on the plan, platform, region, rollout, and workspace settings. See the official usage guide.

Useful tasks to try first

  • Writing: Turn rough notes into a customer email. Supply the audience, tone, facts, and word limit; check that the draft does not invent commitments.
  • Learning: Ask for an explanation, a worked example, and a practice question. Attempt the question before asking for feedback.
  • Research: Compare three options against your own criteria. Ask for dated sources and separate verified facts from recommendations.
  • Data analysis: Provide a small, non-sensitive sample spreadsheet. Ask it to explain missing values and assumptions before producing a chart.
  • Coding: Give it the relevant code, error message, expected behavior, and a reproducible example. Review the changes and run tests.

Images and visual content

ChatGPT supports image creation and editing where available. You can describe a new image or provide a reference and specify changes. For a useful first test, request a blog illustration at your required aspect ratio, then check the text, composition, and consistency. Image access and usage limits depend on your plan and workspace. See OpenAI’s image-generation guide.

ChatGPT pricing: free and paid plans

The following USD prices are listed in OpenAI’s ChatGPT Work and Codex pricing documentation on the review date. Confirm local pricing, taxes, billing terms, and included features at checkout.

Plan Listed subscription price
Free $0 per month
Go $8 per month
Plus $20 per month
Pro $100, $200, or $500 per month
Business $20 per user/month billed annually, or $25 monthly; minimum 2 users
Enterprise and Edu Contact sales for organization-specific terms

Subscription access is not a promise of unlimited use. Work and Codex share usage, and consumption depends on the task and model. API-key usage has separate pricing.

Which plan should you choose?

Our recommendation: Start free and keep a simple record of the tasks you complete, the corrections required, and any limits you encounter. Consider a paid plan when a specific missing feature or recurring limit prevents useful work. A higher subscription price alone does not tell you whether the output will be good enough.

For a team, compare account management and data requirements before comparing individual subscriptions. For a developer building an application, estimate API costs separately. Our guide to testing AI tools before paying provides a practical evaluation approach.

Which ChatGPT model should you use?

Model availability changes by product, account, and rollout. The model name and settings shown in your account are more useful than a directory claiming one permanent “latest model.” OpenAI’s model-selection guide distinguishes efficient options for focused tasks from stronger options for demanding analysis.

Compare available models with the same input. Keep the option that meets your quality requirements with acceptable waiting time and usage. Save a representative test task so you can repeat the comparison when your workflow changes.

Privacy and connected tools

Review Settings → Data controls before uploading sensitive material. ChatGPT Work’s cloud browser has its own sessions and browser data. You can clear those sessions in Cloud browser settings; see the official browser documentation.

OpenAI documents no training on Enterprise business data by default. Retention, permissions, and feature coverage depend on the workspace and configuration. Connected services have their own data policies. See the enterprise administration FAQ.

For a first evaluation, use public material or a redacted sample. Give integrations only the access needed for your task, and check who can view shared outputs. Do not assume that installing an app locally means all processing stays on your computer.

Where ChatGPT needs human review

  • Facts and citations: Open the original source and verify names, dates, numbers, and quoted claims.
  • Code: Check behavior, dependencies, and access permissions before deploying changes.
  • Spreadsheets: Inspect formulas, units, filters, and a few hand-calculated examples.
  • Generated content: Check accuracy, originality, brand requirements, and rights to the material you supply.
  • External actions: Review the destination and consequences before allowing a tool to send, publish, or change records.

A practical first ChatGPT prompt

I run a small online store. Using only the product facts below, draft a 120-word product description for first-time buyers. Include three concrete benefits, avoid unsupported claims, and list any missing information separately. Product facts: [paste your facts].

Judge the result against four questions: Did it preserve every supplied fact? Did it invent anything? Does the language suit the customer? How much editing did it need? This gives you a better buying signal than an impressive but unrelated demo.

ChatGPT frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT free?

Yes. There is a free plan, with paid options for additional access. Check the pricing section above and your account’s current limits before choosing a subscription.

Is ChatGPT the same as an OpenAI model?

No. ChatGPT is the application experience. The model is one component; available tools, permissions, and supplied context also affect what a session can accomplish.

Does a paid subscription include API usage?

Do not treat it as an API-credit bundle. OpenAI lists API-key usage separately from subscription usage. Check the billing terms for the exact integration you intend to use.

Can ChatGPT access current information?

Available search and browser tools can retrieve online information. Ask it to show the sources it actually used; a fluent answer by itself does not establish that it checked the web.

Can it create images and help with programming?

Yes, with the relevant features available to your account. Image generation supports creation and editing, while coding workflows can help inspect, modify, and test code. Review the results before using them.

Why is a feature missing from my account?

Check your plan, platform, region, rollout status, and workspace permissions. A feature shown in a demonstration may not yet be enabled for your account.

Is it suitable for confidential company information?

That depends on your organization’s approved workspace, configuration, contracts, and connected services. Ask your administrator which data and workflows are permitted before uploading confidential files.

How should I compare it with another AI assistant?

Use the same three real tasks and score factual accuracy, completeness, editing time, and total cost. Include one difficult task and one common daily task. Choose based on the work you need completed rather than a universal ranking.
